Jao van de Lagemaat — Acting Associate Laboratory Director, Materials, Chemical, and Computational Science

Jao van de Lagemaat is responsible for the leadership, management, and strategic and technical direction of NLR's materials, chemical, and computational science capabilities.

The work he oversees spans fundamental and applied R&D in materials discovery, chemistry and nanoscience, solar energy conversion, hydrogen and fuel cells, energy storage, advanced manufacturing, and advanced computing.

Previously, van de Lagemaat served as director of NLR's Chemistry and Nanoscience Center, leading research across photovoltaics, energy storage, hydrogen and fuel cells, advanced manufacturing, and photophysical and photochemical energy systems. He joined NLR in 1998 as a postdoctoral researcher studying charge transport and recombination in dye-sensitized solar cells and has since held scientific and leadership roles focused on semiconductor materials, nanoscience, and solar energy conversion. He has authored more than 100 scientific publications.

Van de Lagemaat earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from Utrecht University. He is a fellow of the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute and the Materials Science and Engineering program at the University of Colorado Boulder.
